The Importance of the Open

The CrossFit Games Season is right around the corner and we encourage all of you to participate.  The season starts with the Open, is followed by Regionals, and finishes with the Games (where the fittest man and woman on earth are crowned).  Never heard of the Open?  Want to learn more about the Games Season?  Keep reading.

What is the CrossFit Games season?

CrossFit Headquarters (HQ) originally came up with idea of the Games in an attempt to “crown the fittest man and woman in the world.”  The Games started in 2008 as a downright brutal set of workouts but has evolved to the point where anyone, anywhere in the world can compete.

History of the CrossFit Games

The Open is first stage of the Games Season and is designed to be all inclusive.  HQ will post one workout per week for five weeks (from March 6th through April 3rd).  We’ll all complete the WODs throughout the week then log our scores before the following Sunday.

Athletes of all levels compete in the exact same workouts throughout those five weeks.  HQ does a great job of designing the WODs to be doable for new or unconditioned athletes, while simultaneously being challenging for upper level competitors.  Moral of the story, you are in good enough shape to participate.

The top scoring individual athletes (and highest scoring gyms) from the Open will move on to the Regional competition.  Regionals consists of 3 workouts per day over the course of a weekend.  The top Regional athletes then move on to the CrossFit Games.

If you have that nervous/excited feeling right now, then you are ready to go sign up.  If you’re still not convinced, here are some simple reasons why you should join in.

  1. It’s fun.
  2. It’s motivating.
  3. You’re going to be working out during that time anyway.

As a matter of fact, we’re programming the workouts into the schedule twice a week (on Wednesdays and Saturdays) so making it official by registering is just a formality.

The bottom line is that we really do want to see you guys reach you health and fitness goals.  Either by providing a little extra motivation or simply providing a few workouts, we feel that participating in the open will bring you closer to your goals.  That is why we recommend that you commit, register and officially become part of the 2013 CrossFit Open.

See you at the gym!
